Mets Magic Number Down to 7

The New York Mets magic number is down to 7! If you’re not familiar with magic numbers, a magic number is the combination of wins a division leading team needs and losses the 2nd place team in the division needs. So currently the Mets need some sort of combination like 4 wins and 3 Washington Nationals losses or 6 wins and 1 Washington Nationals loss until they clinch the division title. At 85-65, the Mets look poised to complete the season as the NL East Champions. The Mets have 12 games left in the season so it’ll be interesting to see how the season plays out.

The Mets next 9 games will be against the Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, and Philadelphia Phillies. Should things go terribly wrong and terribly right for the Nationals in that time span, the Mets close the season with 3 games at home against the Nationals. The last thing the Mets want to do is suffer some sort of collapse that ends with them losing the division at home on the final day of the season.

Yoenis Cespedes, who started terrific for the Mets has recently been in a slump but may be on his way back. From September 12th to the 19th, Cespedes was 2 for 25. However, in his last 2 games he is 4 for 7 with 3 doubles. Hopefully he’s back in the swing of things. It’ll be interesting to monitor how they handle Matt Harvey’s workload. Harvey recently went 12 days without pitching before facing the Yankees Sunday night. Harvey is being monitored on an innings count because he is a young pitcher who has been hurt before. While it would be a devastating loss to lose Harvey at this point in the season, I’m confident in the rest of the Mets starting rotation (Syndergaard, Matz, Colon and deGrom) to hold things together. Additions like Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson continue to provide more punch to the lineup and prove to be great moves by GM Sandy Alderson.
